I`m not going to pretend I know everything about earning money, and I won`t promise I`ll get you rich in 21 days or anything like that. What I instead want to do in this post is outline a very awesome tip that, if you follow correctly, WILL make you money.
It won`t just make you a bit of money here and there, but will provide a regular and solid return on your time without you having to do any follow-up sales work.
In other words perform the action that I describe, do nothing else, and you will start earning money from today (or at least very soon) for the foreseeable future.
Start earning money online – how?
It is writing books for Kindle.
Yep, it is not the most exciting thing in the world but it is a solid bit of extra income. Well, at least it has been for me for the last four years, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
I earn ON AVERAGE about £300 per month each month from Amazon Kindle for a bunch of books I wrote 3-4 years ago.
To earn this money I literally do zero promotional work.
Amazon takes care of it and has always done so.
Yes, they take a big 30% cut which a lot of authors moan about but for me to earn that sort of money without having to constantly email a mailing list or regularly update a blog is gold dust (although I do both of those things too).
Let’s put it this way….
Total earnings to date
These are the figures for time spent compared to earnings made…
3.5 years in months = 42 months x £300 per month = £12,600
Total time spent on creating the books
Each book took on average 8 hours to write and as there are 10 books that means I spent about 80 hours writing.
Let`s round that up to 100 for admin type work (proofing, formatting, uploading, etc).
10 books x 8 hours per book = 80 hours + (20 for admin) = 100 hours spent on creating these books.
Earnings per hour worked
My average hourly rate for these books works out to a pretty nice…
£12,600/100 hours = £126 per hour for my work
I don`t say that to brag but to hopefully inspire. I didn`t even have a website at the time related to this niche. I do now of course.
What is even better than that is that I sell the books as a bundle to my mailing list for nearly $30 and have sold hundreds over the last few years too for extra income on these books.
That is not a bad sum of money for someone who has spent ZERO time promoting the books and has done pretty much nothing in regard to the sales.
Passive income? Yes please!
These books will keep on selling probably until Amazon Kindle explodes or dies a death if it ever does, so that £126 per hour rate will actually keep going up.
That is the definition of passive income in my book.
You may be thinking that these are big epic books of a super high quality.
Well, you would be wrong (about the big, epic bit anyway). They are actually of a high quality, otherwise this method of earning just wouldn`t work.
Don`t be fooled into thinking you can just release any old junk and have it make you enough money to buy that Ferrari in 2 months.
All my books are well written, instructional pieces on my main business (which I`m keeping quiet about on this blog as I am now a minor celebrity in my field and if I reveal myself here on an alpha male site it will harm my image over there).
I also did the cover designs and proofing for all the books in the early days which added hours and hours on top.
What a fool!
There are cheap tools that would have saved me many hours but I was too tight to use them! (more on this later).
Here is what you should do….
Think about what you know a lot about
Pick 5 topics that you are confident you could write 1000-2000 words on.
This can be your job, aspects of your job, any hobbies, or any skills you have. For instance, many of you here will do office based jobs, be it technical computer work, sales or admin. You could write about the tips, tricks and skills you have learnt from that.
Many of you will have hobbies such as gaming, fitness, nutrition, sport, dating and sex amongst other things. Choose literally any topic you have any skill or passion about.
Think about the struggles you have had in those topics.
For example, how you lost 100 pounds or how you finally lost your virginity to the dirty old fag hag from the greasy pub nearby, or how to swing a golf club to drive 200 yards.
Now, once you have picked your 5 categories, write 1000 words on each.
Try to be specific on the topic.
For example, you don`t want to choose the topic of how you lost 100 pounds, that is too vague.
Ideally you’d want to narrow it down…
For example, how you lost 100 pounds as a 20 year old male who had to contend with his mom’s cooking and who got bullied at school.
That is much more specific.
In a future post I`ll detail more examples on how being specific on each topic will make you far more money but for now, get started on writing your 1000 words on each of your chosen topics.
Don`t be an idiot and try to do it all yourself!
Go to Fiverr, or a similar site, and pay someone $5 to design the cover for you, unless you are a super slick designer yourself, as this will save you hours.
I was a complete plonker and learnt how to design my own covers.
This was a good skill to learn but took a hell of a long time and I could have spent that time writing more, learning less about design, and actually making more money.
We live and learn. Don`t make my mistake.
Another thing I do these days is pay someone to proofread my eBooks. This guy doesn`t just proof them but he tidies up the formatting, makes everything uniform and generally improves the presentation.
I pay him $25 per book of about 5000 words but you can probably get someone to do this cheaper on Fiverr too. In the early days you can do it yourself, although it can be painstakingly time-consuming.
Upload to Amazon`s self-publishing wing, `KDP`, as soon as you are ready
Once you have got your 1000 words written, proofed and formatted, and your cover designed, you simply go to Amazon KDP and create an account.
Then, you can upload your book and cover to the site and start earning money.
I recommend you start off by putting the book up for sale for the minimum price, which is $0.99 in the US, as this will help get the ball rolling with sales.
You only get 30% royalty for having a book this cheap, which is a con but at least it will help sales and reviews and if the book does well, it won`t be long before you up your price which will allow you to get back to 70% royalties.
1000-2000 words doesn`t sound like a lot but before you try to write a massive epic on the history of peanut butter, you need to know the book will sell.
Find your niche
This bit is super important.
Wait one month and see which book has sold the best. This is your niche.
For example, if the peanut butter book sold 3 copies, but the getting laid to the fag hag one sold 50 then this is your niche. (In reality, I would bet the golf one would do best, I mean only a few of you perverts like old fag hags).
Once you have your niche, write another book on this topic or expand the book to make it about 6000 words.
Then, write another on a similar idea within the niche.
Don`t be disheartened if your first book falls flat on it`s bum
Some of my books don`t sell well at all and others sell massive amounts. Once I found out which books did well, I created more on a similar subject and started earning more. You need to know which topics will do well for you.
You could just do lots of research but honestly, if you know nothing about cross-stitching fabrics then it won`t matter too much if you write a book on it as the book will suck.
Stick to what you know or are learning about and the books will be better and more authentic.
I actually sell my books to my email mailing list which has grown from zero to 10,000 in less than 3 years with pretty much zero advertising. Most of these subscribers have joined in the last year. The snowball effect has truly taken place there.
I still sell these eBooks to my mailing list, who I treat with huge respect ( I give them zero junk or spam), I have made sure they are damn good too – if I didn`t, I would haemorrhage subscribers faster than you could say `fag hag`.
Get writing and get earning money online
Anyway that is my basic outline on how to make a good side earner on Amazon.
Now, don`t go back to sitting around like most people do when they read things like this. Actually do some work.
Instead of scratching your nuts while catching up with Game of Thrones, your task is to pick your topic, get writing, invest a few quid on getting others to do the donkey work, then upload it to Amazon.
If you do a good job and release a new book of good quality that actually helps people every month, this time next year you will thank me as your passive income lifestyle will be truly up and running.
Leave a comment below and let me know what your questions or experiences on the topic are and I`ll help out as much as I can.
